Insects, mites, and booklice pose significant biological threats to stored durable commodities. These pests tunnel into kernels and seeds, causing severe losses in both quantity and quality. Their activity damages the crop in two main ways:
Physical Damage: Feeding directly reduces the weight and nutritional value of the grain while destroying the seed embryo.
Secondary Vulnerability: The entry wounds left by feeding pests break open the protective outer seed coat, making it easy for mold and bacteria to invade.
High moisture content, warm temperatures, and readily available food source accelerate pest life cycles, leading to rapid population explosions if left unmanaged.
